BEST IN THE WEST

This weekend EBB is hosting the bodyboard state round series at Mandurah Wedge. The conditions are looking good for the event so there is no doubt some big moves will be going down throughout the weekend. There is a lot of young talent thrown across the heat draw which will provide a very interesting competition to spectate. Also tonight, Chris White is holding a premiere in Scarborough for his highly anticipated film, Grow Up. I shall see you at both of these events!

CHANGE OF SEASON

Over the past few days the swell has gotten bigger, the winds are moving faster & the air is becoming colder. Winter is here my friends. Last winter provided many good waves around Australia & hopefully this year will be the same. Not to long ago Brendon Backshall hosted the Teenage Riot competition at Mandurah Wedge. Congratulations to good friends George Humphreys & James Purvis for taking out their divisions in the comp & receiving sponsorships from Manta Bodyboards. VALENTINES DAY

The weekend is fastly approaching, and this Sunday just so happens to be Valentines Day. Valentines day is fucked.

Last year on Valentines day I woke up after camping at binnies with some good friends, to see there was actually swell. I called up Waylo to see what he was up to and he said Jono Russel and Brendon Gabel were towing down at Singleton, so I decided to go down for a look. I took a few photos then went out for a paddle as the banks were pretty sick. I went home after a fun surf and slept for a bit and was awoken by a phone call from a friend of mine, Grudge. He asked me if I wanted to come down for a surf at singoes with him and Wade, and it was still offshore so I was in. I remember getting in the car and both of them were pissy as fuck and loving life, we scored some fun little waves and had a good time.

My Valentines Day is now transformed into a remberance day for Wade, as this was one of many good times shared with him. I miss you brother.

Yesterday I went down south with some close friends, we checked around Yallingup and decided to go out at Smiths because of rumours Margaret River was dry and crap everywhere. Smiths was pretty sick and I just went out for a surf, then I went in and surfed/shot fun wedging A - Frames. After a good surf we came in to get some food and chilled for a little bit, then Cameron and Steven decided to go back out for a grovel. They came in to find Stevens camera bag was stolen with his $800 camera in it as well as Cam's car keys. 3 hours later a locksmith comes from Busselton and we get a new set of keys made up for the car. On the way driving home, we witnessed the aftermath of a hectic car crash, and saw police carrying away two body bags, we thought this was going to be the end to our bad day.

We arrived at Mandurah train station around 7:30pm to drop Steven and Josh off, when a man approaches the window of my car. He asked me for a lighter so I gave him one, then he was just sitting in my window for like 5 minutes and then he started on Cam for no apparent reason, then he said to us, have you ever seen a 9mm before? And started threatening to shoot us for the car and stuff and we were left witless and speechless. He then said, wallets and phones now. Cameron hands him his phone and he rides off. We then called over the Railway Police and then went to the police station to make a statement and such. This man might have not have had a gun or anything but we certainly didn't want to take the risk, he was tripping on something hectic. So pretty much we suffered from what ever can go wrong, will go wrong. Here is a couple of photos from A - Frames;

Okay, I'm back from Bali now, I actually got back a week ago. Overall I have to say it was a sick trip, I had loads of fun scored fun waves and had good times. So I've come to the conclusion that I love Bali.

Since I've been back everythings been a little weird, it seems there is a lot of tension in the atmosphere in Mandurah. The waves have been poop, but there could be some good waves coming next week.

Today I bring you a young Javanese man who is situated behindthe Dynasty resort in South Kuta, Bali. He sells everything from watersport tourism to cool abstract paintings, much like every other market person in Bali. But unlike most market people in Bali, Ronnie McDonald is a nice, respectful top fucking lad! I met this dude last year when I stayed at the Dynasty, and he drove me on his outrigger to Kuta Reef. I then hung out with him pretty much every arvo and sunk some beers and watched the sunset (bit corny). I was stoked that he remembered my name when I walked past his market the other morning, and now I have been hanging out with him again. Here's a couple of photos of him and his surroundings.

Yesterday morning I went to Canggu. the waves were pretty sick and I was super keen to surf, so i pretty much took 3 shitty photos then headed out with friend Ben Harney. 2nd wave in I snapped my leash which sucked as it was a trek to swim due to a gnarly current. After about 2 hours surfing the main beachy peak we paddled over to this left point which was pretty fun on the bigger ones that opened up. Heres a couple of photos:

THE PAST FEW DAYS

First off - I have decided to can the diary/post a day thing, as I do not do interesting things every single day of the trip, so here's a shortened version of what has happened over the last three days.

Christmas Eve I woke up feeling pretty gross from the night before, and then I went to Waterbom park with my family which didn't really help at all. Twenty US dollars later time has flew and I am out cold on my hotel bed. I wake up in the morning feeling great, one of those times when you wake up and you know you are going to have a good day. I got an iPhone for Christmas which I couldn't be more stoked with, probably is and will be the best mobile phone of all time! I then went down stairs to use my laptop to post some Christmas love on Facebook, and I come across a horror shock. It turns out that a friend of mine and alot of other people, Wade Mccurdy has tragically passed away, I can still not believe that such an amazing dude is gone, I still can't get my head around it. This pretty much impacted me immediately with devastation and turned the best Christmas ever into the worst one ever. Wade was one of the coolest people I have ever met in my life as well as being a naturally talented bodyboarder. It is so sad that he is gone, but I know he is having a good time in heaven with Ryan! It has only been a week since I last seen him, but now he is gone it feels like it was a very long time ago. Here is a couple of photos of Wadey from some memorable times.

Today I surfed Kuta reef with Jakeb, pretty cool heading out on those dodgy looking out rigger boats. The surf was pretty fun but super packed with arrogant locals snaking you every single wave. Tomorrow I am heading to Canggu in the morning (I'm actually taking my camera this time) and meeting up with Margs man Ben Barney Harney, hopefully we score some fun waves. Tomorrow I will put up a bunch of pics from the streets of Bali which I have took on my iPhone and hopefully some good Canggu photos. Until then, Good night.

This morning Jakeb and I headed up to Canggu in search for some decent waves, we found what we were looking for. I didn't take my camera as I didn't want to leave it unattended so I just took my surf gear. As soon as we arrived I realised I should have took my camera, we had just rocked up to 3-4 foot clean perfect wedgy peaks, all down the beach. We also headed out to this left hander reef point wave straight in front of the cafe which was super fun! After about 4 hour s of surfing we downed a mexican pizza from the Canggu Cafe and I think that pretty much topped off a great day. I will probably head back to Canggu on Christmas day or boxing day, and possibly check some spots in the southern region on another day (swell providing).

Tomorrow I'm going to Watabom with my family, which is super fun and I don't think I will ever grow out of it haha. Will post some photos tomorrow! pce

2 - LITTLE BLACK BAGS 100th POST

Coincidences are sick! Yesterday arvo I was sitting in the hotel pool while a familiar figure walks past, I wasn't sure if it was who I thought it was, but I was right. It turns out that one of my good friends Jakeb Peterson is staying in the room above mine, now I have someone to roam the crowded streets and get barrelz with. Here is my bartering tip for anyone that is going to Bali; Offer a quarter and pay a third. Some of the sales persons ask for way to much, for instance I today I was in Poppies Lane One, and asked this Balinese guy how much for 3 pairs of bans, he straight out says 1.4 million Rupiah which as far as I know is like over $100 Australian. I then convinced him to give me 3 for 50,000.

Anyways, gave Canggu a skip this morning and just mucked around at Kuta with Jakeb, dodging plastic bags and dead bodies. Probably a bad choice because my friend Ben Harney from Margaret River told me it was fun. Probably head there tomorrow and I will let you know how it goes!

I have just arrived in Bali and like the title of this post states, it's so flipping hot! Got some dope earphones from duty free, about 10 pairs of bans and some crazy lighters and I've only been here for about 3 hours! Just realized I left my memory card at home, which has now left me with my slow, 1 gig one :( I am going to make a post each day of my trip, so I guess I'm starting a little Bali diary thingy. Probably going to head to Canggu early tomorrow morning so stay posted!

Flat day fun has been a regular activity lately in Mandurah, for obvious reasons. It's been a bit to hot to skate so my friends and I have been re directed to some jetty jumping, reef swim-throughs and chilling on the Doddies pontoon. I am heading off to Bali in 6 days, I'm not expecting to score good waves but I am hoping there will be at least a ripple, because that would still be a whole lot better than WA at the moment. This could possibly be my last post before Bali, so until then Merry Christmas & a happy new year!

On Thursday Phil Winsor and I headed down to the South West region hoping to score some good waves, but due to a wonky swell direction everywhere pretty much sucked. After driving around until about 8:30 we met up with other Mandurah friends Cameron Dicks, Mitch Gobby & Steven Dodd, we then made the call to head out to Redgate. There was 3-4 foot wedges on offer, but it was very inconsistent and packed with stand ups. In the late afternoon we went for a muck around session at Rabbits shorey and shot a couple of fisheye photos, here is the result;

FRIDAY THE 2ND OF OCTOBER

George Humphreys and I jumped on the TransWA bound for Margaret River. The bus stopped shortly in Dunsborough and we quickly said hello my good friend Theo Ross. About 40 minutes later the bus pulled into Margs town and we were greeted by Tom Purvis - who kindly let myself George and Lewy Finnegan stay at his pad. Tom was on his break when he got us from the bus stop so he had to get back to making sandwiches, but then his brother James escorted us back to the house. We then went for a fun little surf at a reforming left bank next to Gas known as Little Left. When we got home we showed the boys George's new resume (which will be up on Vimeo soon) and then hit the sack waiting for the next day to arrive.

SATURDAY THE 3RD OF OCTOBER

Today was my sisters birthday, the lucky bitch got a dope little TV. Today we headed to Little Left again due to onshore winds, but it was a lot better than the previous day. About 500 Reverse spins and one big flip later the boys got out of the water and we headed into town on our skateboards. We headed up to the Op Shop and raided the shit out of it. After purchasing some good op shop finds we rolled back into town to hang out with more friends Sam Molloy, Duke & Tom Hewitt, Zack Lithgow, Cam Hutchins and Hugh Forward. We got some food and chilled for a bit and then headed out for a late arvo sewers surf - it was terrible. Everyone went out except for me, I chilled (literally) on the rocks with DK Declan. After a nice dinner (thanks Al) we waited for Mr Lewy Finnegan to arrive at the Purvis's place. 3 hours later the little freak shows up and after the re union he presents us with his newest resume, it is hectic how good it is!

SUNDAY THE 4TH OF OCTOBER

This morning we woke up early and checked a few spots, Gas being the final selection. The swell was a bit funny today which didn't make the best conditions but there was still some okay ones coming through. The light was terrible so I pretty much didn't bother shooting - even though Lewy was ripping (as usual). We left the beach pretty early and once again headed to town on planks of wood. We payed a second visit to the Op Shop as Lewy was super syked to get in on the craze haha. About 50 bargains later we skated to the Margaret River skatepark and had a fun little roll around on the wave quarter. You know those sorts of people that are just good at everything? Well Lewy Finnegan and George Humphreys are those sorts of people. We ran into a friend from Mandurah at the skatepark, Mark Claydon. Not long after greeting him George was on Marks bike showing his skills! Skating heats you up pretty easy, and where better to cool off in Margs than Riverdog! We scored a super fun right at Rivermouth which we surfed until dark. Tonight was Pizza night - all I have to say is SO GOOD.

MONDAY THE 5TH OF OCTOBER

As we were pulling into the Gas carpark this morning there was a rude head sticking out. This head belonged to the one and only Thom Borris, who was accompanied by another friend I hadn't seen properly in years, Mat Kennedy. We didn't even bother to check it as we were already told by Hugh Gas, Geachies and Boodj were all cracking. We ran down the track to see good shaped 3-4 foot waves at Gas, with only a few crew out. Everyone hurried into the water, the first stand out wave was Mat Kennedy. He took off on a thick surging right and got absolutely smoked. There was nicely executed moves going down on the left, right and in Duke Hewitts case, center. As per usual we headed into town after the surf, got food and chilled. We headed out to Box in the arvo for Georges first ever session there. Phil Windsor and James Walsh were already out getting some ramps and barrels. Lewy was too keen and took off on a close out set and cut up his head (looks like someone stabbed him with a pen) and back, but nothing serious. Burnt out from the Box surf we headed back to make some BIG hamburgers at the Purvis's place - Lewy and Tom should go on Ready Steady Cook I swear! All the lads came over after tea to chill around the ('long lasting') bonfire. We also saved Mat and Tom from sleeping in the Rivermouth carpark and gave them the luxury of sleeping in Mat's car in the Purvis's driveway!

TUESDAY THE 6TH OF OCTOBER

This morning Tom Morris, Mat Kennedy, Lewy Finnegan, Tom Purvis, George Humphreys and I squished into Mat's car and drove to check Box. It looked pretty fun/good with only James Walsh out there. We were watching it for a bit waiting for James to get a wave, when all of a sudden he bus drove one in and was paddling as fast as he could to come back in. We didn't think much of this at first, but we waited for him to come in so we could find out why he paddled in. It turns out that he saw a shark at least 2 and a half metres long, which is way to hectic if you are kinda far out to sea by yourself! So we barred Box and made the drive down to Cobbles in hope of waves, big mistake. It was too big for it and the low tide wasn't making it any better. We got in the car to head back to Margaret River and what do you know? Mat's car won't start. So half an hour of fiddling later we are on our way to Boodji on the basis that it apparently has a good bank. On the way down the track I spoke to Nic Barclay and Mitch Woodland who said it was pretty fun but small, which was enough to get me amped as I hadn't been to Boodji in ages. I shot a bank past the creek which had some pretty fun 2-3 foot peaks. Unfortunately for Tom Purvis some dickhead standup can't duckdive and put a deep gash in Tom's slick!

A trek and a half later we were at the Gas carpark and keen for Chooks! We then headed back to the house and chilled and watched some surf flicks and feasted on spag bog and fell asleep like pensioners!

WEDNESDAY THE 7TH OF OCTOBER

Today was my last day, and I was hoping it was going to be the best day as we were planning to score Mufflers. Tom's step dad lead us down the track until Mat's Camry wagon couldn't go any further, and then we somehow managed to squeeze ten people and 8 boards into one 4 wheel drive for the remainder of the track. When we rocked up at Mufflers the tide was just to low, and the wind was a bit to South, devo. We ventured back up Injidup way and surfed a little heavy right hander known as Shcabbits which is a peak somewhere in between Mitchells and Inji Carpark. This wave was made for fisheye photos, just so happens I don't have a housing! Still got some cool shots. After getting a few beatings Tom Morris, Mat Kennedy said our thank yous and goodbyes to everyone and headed up the track to make our way back to Mandurah/Perth but with one more stop along the way. We checked Smiths Reef and it looked pretty fun with only 2 guys out so we paddled out and the 2 sticks that were out there practically left the water when we paddled out so we were super stoked. We got about 2 hours of fun barrels and ramps to ourselves, which changed Mat's mood from The Hulk to Little Miss Sunshine. We stopped in Busselton for some (expensive) KFC and headed home on the new highway, which really doesn't save any time!

DAY 3.

Today was good and bad for many reasons. Today was the day of the 3rd state round/EBB pro 2009, it was held at Boneyards in Bunker Bay. It was good because the waves were cracking, bad because it was raining, good because I got to catch up with old friends, bad because you had to walk to and from Boneyards and worse because I didn't get many shots! But anyway, there was surfing talent all over the place from west to east coast. Congrats to Lewy Finnegan for taking out states today and states overall for 2009, Chucky for winning states today and 2nd overall and Ben Veitch for winning Opens today.

Also I would like to say thanks once again to people who like to steal stuff from bags on the beach, so whoever stole my food karma is on your tail! This also made me and Chris Gurney walk to the restaurant at the carpark, and it was a rather posh one at that. So 2 (shit) pizzas and $36.00 later me and gurney were back on track to see the remaining minutes of the EBB pro final. Despite the big onshore shithouse waves, today was a fun day. The first rounds of the 3rd state titles for the year kicked off at Injidup carpark. Good to see good friends Lewy Finnegan, Cam Hutchins, George Humphreys and Tom Purvis all get through to the cadet semis, which should be held tomorrow at Boneyards.

I took heaps of shots but mainly just lifestyles as the water was heaps rank and glary. Tomorrow is my last day before I head back to Mandurah and I will post all the photos when I get home tomorrow. Enough words, here's action.

EBB PRO DAY 1.

This morning I headed down to the EBB pro that was at held at pretty fun mousetraps. Joe Clarke, Alex Halsey and Jake Stone's heat was first in the water and it was sick to watch, Joe was ripping throughout the whole heat and Jake got the highest score for the day for a barrel to ars to roll.

I took a couple of shots but it was pretty dark weather, I also took some polaroids with my new camera and they turned out okay. Enjoy! Check back tomorrow for photos of day 2!

Congratulations to Jeff Hubbard for taking out the Sintra grandslam event, just narrowly beating Hardy. Unfortunately for me my webcast started tripping balls as soon as the final came on! But I was getting so amped watching the BP vs Hardy semi, you could say I was like John Barker at a Freo game (when they are actually winning!)
